The Husky girls basketball team lost 50-23 to Junction City and 54-32 to Toledo last week at home.
“I think we played against some pretty good teams, tough competition right now,” Coach Jason Gorham said. “We made some improvements between the two games as far as how they handled the press.”
Both games, the team struggled offensively, Coach Gorham said, but they did cut turnovers from the press from Junction City to Toledo.
Against Junction City on Dec. 10, Junction City opened with a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. By halftime, Junction City led 22-7. At the end of the third quarter, Junction City was up 44-11.
Teresa Lewis and Lei Himan-Teves each scored five points for the Huskies; Chelsea Hackworth, four; Cindy Jones and Ashley Wall, two each; and Kendra Greene, five.
Gambes led Junction City with 12 followed by Vetkos with 10.
Against Toledo Thursday, the Huskies trailed 15-11 after one, then Toledo broke away with a 22-4 second-quarter run to lead 37-15 at halftime. The two teams played even the second half, with a 7-4 showing for Toledo in the third and a 13-10 showing for the Huskies in the fourth.
Hackworth led the team with nine; Greene, eight; Lewis, five; Himan-Teves, four; and Wall, Ashley Anderson and Jones, two each.
Warfield led Toledo with 16 points.
Against Toledo, the Huskies shot 14-35 from the field and 5-10 from the foul line. Coach Gorham would like to see a few more shooting attempts.
The Huskies continued to struggle in rebounding with 16 total and Himan-Teves leading with four boards. Coach Gorham hopes that statistic will improve with the return of Rachel Gaskey, who missed both games last week.
Lewis added four assists and three steals.
Total, the Huskies had 21 turnovers against Toledo.
The Huskies play next at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Creswell in the Junction City Tournament. The tournament runs through the weekend.
