Husky girls place at top in two golf tournaments

Sweet Home’s varsity golfers took last week off, but that just gave the junior varsity and the girls a chance to show what they could do.

And they did.

At Middlefield in Cottage Grove on Wednesday, April 29, the Huskies played a two-person scramble format. Freshmen Jake Hindmarsh, who has spent most of the season with his wrist in a cast, and Jackson Lynn finished third behind teams from Oakridge and Cottage Grove, shooting 40 on a par 34 course.

Right behind, with a 41, were the Husky girls, Haley May and Alena Davis, also freshmen. They shot a 41.

“The girls finished fourth and the boys third out of 16 two-person teams,” Coach Pat Davis noted.

Then things got better, he said.

On Friday, in only their second 18-hole round of the season, at Fiddler’s Green outside Junction City, May was the medalist out of 29 golfers from around the league, both boys and girls, shooting a 74 on the par 54 course.

“It was bogey golf,” Davis said. “She was 20 over. I put her down for a 74.”

The Huskies dominated the medals, with Hindmarsh second overall with a 77. Lynn was third overall with an 80 and Seth Wright, another freshman, tied for fourth with a Cottage Grove opponent at 81.

Alayna Davis was seventh overall, with an 85 to take home the second-place girls medal.

The JV and girls will get another chance to play 18, this time at Middlefield, on Thursday, May 7.

The district tournament for the varsity will take place Monday and Tuesday, May 11-12, at Tokatee in Blue River.
