The Sweet Home girls water polo team is headed to state after placing third in districts with a win over West Albany Saturday.
The Huskies opened their foray into Districts with a 15-9 loss to Sprague, but Coach Kathy Benzo said “they worked real hard for that win.”
The Huskies then came back against West Albany, which is the first time Sweet Home had played that team when it wasn’t combined with South Albany.
“The girls played real tough,” Benzo said of the Huskies’ 12-10 victory.
Sweet Home will open its state tournament against Osborn of Beaverton at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Corvallis Aquatic Center.
“The girls played very well at Districts and made me and their families very proud,” Benzo said of the Huskies, who did not compete last year for lack of a coach. “They had wonderful sportmanship under some very distressful situations. All the girls played very well and geled extremely well as the team that they are. We are very excited to be going to state.”
Sweet Home’s Alyshia Benzo and Nicole Martin were named to the district all-star first team, while Jayce Calhoon was named to the boys first team. Laura Gourley, Justine Calhoon, Joel Gunselman and Shawn Adams were honorable mentions.
