Husky golfers second at Santiam

Nick Waller shot a 40 to lead the Husky boys golf squad uin a three-way held at Santiam Golf Course, Stayton.

Central won the day with a 176, Sweet Home was second at 181 and Cascade was third at 188.

Following Waller was Wes Smith, 45, Keith Horn, 48, Scott Gagner, 48, and Chad Emmert, 51.

“Nick led our team and was meet medalist,” Coach Tom Horn said. “He played very well on a soft, damp course. He is ready to play against top-flight competition.”

Coach Horn said he would like to see his second, third and fourth team members be more consistant.

“One hole during a round has seemed to really hurt us,” Coach Horn said. “If we could eliminate the one bad hole we will challenge the rest of the league schools.”

Keith Horn, Wes Smith, Scott Gagner, Jarrod Burcham and Chad Emmert all have ability, Coach Horn said, now they must take it to the golf course.

“We’re still looking forward to our best golf of the season,” Coach Horn said of his team’s possibilities.

April 5

Keith Horn shot a 42 to lead the Huskies April 5 at Santiam.

Stayton took the meet with a 165, Sweet Home was second at 176 and North Marion was third at 177.

Following Horn were Nick Waller, 44, Jarrod Burcham, 44, Scott Gagner, 46, and Wes Smith, 47.

“We showed some improvement in this three-way,” Coach Horn said. “The 176 is a low nine holes for the season. Keith Horn shot the kind of round he is expecting to score this season, low for the team with a 42.”

Horn played consistantly, Coach Horn said, with no double bogies for the first round of the year.

“Jarrod Burcham also played his best competitive round of the season. Jarrod showed signs that he is ready to break out and score low.”

After leading the team in scoring the first three matches, Nick Waller faltered a little, back to a 44.

“Nick was disappointed in his score but you just can’t play great every time out. Remember, this is golf,” Coach Horn said.
