Husky softball sixth in league

The Husky softball team remained sixth in league after losing to Sisters 2-1 and Central 7-3 in league games last week. They finished the week with losses in a doubleheader against Newport, 3-2 and 9-6.

At Sisters on Tuesday, the outlaws scored two in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. The Huskies scored a run in the sixth, and the game could have gone either way.

“We just didn’t produce at bats,” Coach Rob Younger said.

Crystal Fowler led at bats going 2-3. Tiffany Martinez singled to score the only run. Kaci Trask tripled.

Hosting Central on Thursday, the Panthers scored three runs in the top of the fifth. The Huskies responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and a third run at the bottom of six to tie the game.

Central scored four runs in the top of the seventh on a series of four Husky errors to win the game.

Trask and Martinez each went 2-4 at bats. Both had two-out singles to drive in runs.

On Saturday, Newport is the number one team in Oregon, Coach Younger said, and he was proud of the way his team went out and competed against the first-team all-state pitcher from Newport.

“We gave her fits,” Coach Younger said. She pitched a perfect five innings, then the Huskies earned some opportunities to score. In the second game, the Huskies scored five runs in the first two innings.

“We’re just not quite getting over the bump,” Coach Younger said. “The kids are playing hard and well with a great attitude.”

They have had a hard time putting together hits and runs.

Against Newport, Trask reached base four times with a double. Heather Wall and Martinez both had two hits on the day.

Wall pitched all week, Coach Younger said. “I thought she had a good week. If we got into trouble, it was when the defense lapsed.”

The Huskies are sixth in the league with a 2-8 record. They could make it to fifth place, held by North Marion, 4-6. To make conference playoffs, they would need to reach fifth.

They played Molalla yesterday (Tuesday) and play their final league game on Monday against Stayton.
