Sweet Home 5
Jefferson 1
The Sweet Home high school summer baseball team defeated Jefferson 5-1 at Jefferson on Thursday.
“Donny Cliver threw a very good game, striking out nine and walking only one today,” Coach Dan Tow said. “We got hits from a lot of people in our lineup. Travis Smith hit the ball well and did a nice job behind the plate. We also had Lance Carter, Jesse Aitken and Tomas Rosa come in and get base hits with men in scoring position to drive in runs for us.”
At bats, Smith went 2-3 with a double and two runs. Aitken went 1-1 with an RBI. Jon Mather went 1-1. Carter went 1-2 with an RBI. Rosa went 1-3 with an RBI. Cliver scored two runs. Ronnie Garcia went 1-2.
The Huskies held Jefferson to two hits.

Newport defeated the Huskies at home on May 31 6-1 and 6-4 in a doubleheader to open the summer season.
“This was the first game of the summer for both teams, and we played a little sloppy at times,” Coach Tow said of the first game. “But we played a lot of people, and that’s what we want to do in the summer.
“Travis Smith and Cody Miller both did a decent job on the mound. Newport had a few hits, but all of their runs were unearned.”
Mark Lewis went 2-4 at bats for the Huskies. O’Donnell went 3-4 with a double and a triple for Newport.
“The second game was similar to the first, but we played a little better, I thought,” Coach Tow said. “Again, one of our big goals in the summer is to play a lot of innings and a lot of people.
“We had a number of situations come up tonight. Some of them we handled well, and some we didn’t. We need to learn from those, so that we don’t make those same kinds of mental mistakes again.”
Lewis went 2-4 with a double. Smith hit a triple.
Iverson had three hits to lead Newport.
