Husky swimmers finish on top at home meet

Sweet Home’s swimmers won both the boys and girls competitions Saturday, Feb. 1, as they hosted Stayton, North Bend and Salem Academy, who brought  athletes who could be factors at this year’s state meet.

Sweet Home competitors in the girls 200 Individual Medley dive in to start the race.

The girls finished with 92 points, ahead of second-place Stayton (70) and the boys outstroked North Bend 112-93.

“The kids did really well,” Coach A Jay Bronson said. “We’re now 5-1 on both sides, which is awesome.”

The win for the girls came despite the absence of regular point-scorers Peyton Markell and Kylie Melkvik, he said.

“Even with that, we were able as a team to come together and get the win, so I’m happy with how it went.”

The girls won all three relays and got double wins in the individual events from Kirsten Sautel (50 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke) and Khloe Sautel (200 Individual Medley and 500 Freestyle).

The boys got individual wins from  RJ Abbott Jr. in the 100 Butterfly, Arman Marble in 500 Freestyle, Andrew Tolman in the 100 Backstroke and Shayne Schuster in the 100 Breaststroke.

RJ Abbott Jr. swims one “leg” of the Husky Mile.

Bronson said Khloe Sautel’s time of 5:29.37 in the 500 Freestyle was a noteworthy mark and noted that sophomore Seth Cox clocked personal bests in all his events.

Abbott and fellow senior Timber Nobles both undertook the Husky Mile, a new challenge that Bronson said he introduced that includes swimming every event in the meet, including legs on the two 200-yard relays and two on the 400 Relay.

“It’s more of a mental exercise than anything else,” Bronson explained. “It’s obviously physical, but it’s more about them understanding ‘We can plow through this.’”

Abbott actually would have won four of the events in which he participated in the Husky Mile, in addition to his butterfly victory.

Friday, Feb. 7, will be Senior Night as the Huskies host North Marion, Salem Academy at 4 p.m. in their final dual meet before districts,
