Husky swimmers set school record at South Albany meet

It may have been a nonscoring meet, but the Sweet Home boys swimmers made their mark anyway by setting a school record in the 200 freestyle relay Saturday at the Albany Sprint Invitational.

The team, of junior Brinden Sanders, freshman Jayce Calhoon, senior Cole Stumbaugh and freshman Michael Schaefer swam 1:35.8.

Coach Doug Peargin said the Huskies will ease off their two-a-day practices as they prepare for districts on Feb. 9-10 in the same South Albany pool.

“This (meet) gives our kids a great chance to not only get a good look at the complex but to actually compete in the same pool they will be swimming in at the district meet,” he said.

The meet also gives coaches a chance to experiment with their lineups and try to determine which swimmers should enter which events in the district meet.

Most of the events featured swimmers who weren’t normally top finishers for Sweet Home in those particular events.

Sarah Rosa was the only individual winner for the girls, taking first in the 50 butterfly (29.0).

The boys had no individual winners, but the 200 medley relay team took first, in 1:54.7.

Peargin said his team will work on “fundamentals” this week.

“We’ve got the conditioning,” he said. “Now we’ve got to get mentally ready to explode into an all-out performance.”

Sweet Home will host North Marion Thursday, Feb. 1, in its last meet before district.
