Husky swimmers top Junction City boys, girls

Opposing coaches have to get up pretty early in the morning to beat one of Doug Peargin’s Husky swimming teams.

Friday, Peargin’s Huskies topped perenially tough Junction City in both boys and girls action at the Husky pool.

“It was a good meet. Our kids swam very well,” Coach Peargin said. “Junction City can nip you any time.”

Although Peargin’s swimmers won, they were handicapped a bit by wearing two swim suits to increase drag.

“I want our kids wearing two suits until we get done with Christmas workouts,” Coach Peargin said. “Then, when we go to the Woodburn meet, 16 teams, we’ll probably go to one suit and see how we do. If we can beat you wearing two suits, we can beat you wearing one.”

The Huskies, especially the girls squad, are deeper than a year ago, which offered Peargin an opportunity to try out swimmers in positions.

Thursday the Huskies will host their own invitational meet featuring Sherwood, Philomath, Stayton and Sisters.

“Sherwood will be really tough,” Coach Peargin said. “Their girls won state last year and their boys were third. The Philomath girls won districts and their boys were third. So, it will be a good meet.”

The meet begins at 4 p.m. at the Husky pool.
