Sweet Home’s boys showed their dominance among 4A wrestling teams in the Mid-Valley Saturday, defeating Cottage Grove, Junction City and North Marion by large scores in back-to-back duals hosted by the Huskies.

The event, which also included Newport, gave the teams a chance to hold in-district duals without having to commit individual dates to those contest, Coach Steve Thorpe said. Sweet Home has already faced Newport, Cascade and Stayton, and the Huskies will host Philomath on Senior Night, Feb. 6.

Dillan Davis works for a takedown against North Marion’s Henry Bankhead, whom Davis later pinned.

Sweet Home didn’t lose many matches Saturday, and indication of the Huskies’ depth.

“I don’t think we lost more than four, five JV matches,” he said. “And we only lost two matches total (at the varsity level).”

The Huskies beat Junction City 84-0, which, Thorpe noted, is “like a perfect game in baseball.”

They defeated Cottage Grove 78-4 and North Marion 75-6.

“Dillan Davis lost to a really good kid, a returning state placer (against Cottage Grove) and Liam Martin lost at heavyweight against North Marian, but I think those are matches we can pick up before the regional tournament (on Feb. 22),” Thorpe said.

Up next is the granddaddy of regular-season high school wrestling tournaments in Oregon, the Oregon Wrestling Classic in Redmond Friday and Saturday, Jan. 17-18. Girls start at 11 a.m. Friday and the top-seeded boys will start at 3:30 p.m.

“I don’t know if we’re the best team in the state, but we’re the No. 1 seed,” Thorpe said. “Everybody’s going to be there.

“We’re getting a lot of pretty strong performances from a lot of kids. I’m pretty proud of that.”

Sweet Home traveled to Harrisburg for a dual Thursday, Jan. 9, a competition that, Thorpe said, drew a standing room-only crowd.

“It is awesome to go to Harrisburg, the No. 1-ranked 3A team in the state,” he said. “People from all over the place were there. This is a great program, a respected program, with great coaches.

Sweet Home’s girls were able to avenge a loss to the Eagles the previous week at the Linn County Championships, with a 36-30 win, even after Thorpe bumped everyone over 130 pounds up a weight.

Madi Looney pinned Harrisburg’s Kenadee Hunter at 145 pounds and then Eturnyti Allison pinned the Eagles’ Brighton Evans-Kinyon at 155 to tie the score at 30-30, which effectively won the match for Sweet Home because Harrisburg forfeited the last two weight divisions.

On the boys side, the Huskies started out with four major decisions in a row, with Tytus Hardee following up with a pin at 126 for a big win over Andrei Donayri, who is a defending 3A state champion.

Then Dylan Davis lost a 17-12 decision at 132 to Luke Cheek, also a defending state titlist.

“He was not giving up a major and he was not giving up a fall,” Thorpe said in crediting Davis’ effort.

Harrisburg went on a three-match roll before Kyle Zajic got things turned around with a pin of  Domanik Gray at 157. But after that it was a see-saw battle before Sweet Home finished on top, 36-24.

“Colton Bennett had a great match with their heavyweight,” Thorpe said of the 285-pound match, which finished in a narrow 3-1 decision for the Eagles’ Hunter Langham.

Duals like (Harrisburg) are good for wrestling,” he added. “It was stressful but it was fun. Good for the sport.”
