Against three of top teams in the 4A division going into the season Friday, and what is likely the second-best team in the 5A, Lebanon, the Huskies stumbled a bit as they kicked off their 2010-11 season.
The Huskies lost all four of their matches, 45-28 to Cascade, 45-34 to Henley, 42-21 to Crook County and 39-27 to Lebanon.
Sweet Home’s Colton Schilling was the only wrestler to sweep his matches, though Kris Newport finished 3-1 on the night.
“It’s tough to start out getting beat like that,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “It’s hard on a guy’s ego, on a guy’s pride. It shows us we have to fix some things. As a coach I don’t think I had them ready, where they need to be.”
In the early-season Oregon Wrestling Federation 4A poll, Henley was ranked first with Crook County fourth and Cascade seventh, two spot behind Sweet Home.
“We have a lot of new faces, a lot of young kids in the line-up,” Thorpe said. “We had a lot of guys bumped up a weight class too, but that’s what we had to do to fill the line-up right now.
“Some kids had good efforts but we didn’t compete good as a team. We need to work on that, get better at it.”
Thorpe said he expects to see Lebanon, Henley and Cascade at this weekend’s Cascade Tournament. Then, on Tuesday, Dec. 14, Sweet Home will host North Marion, West Albany and Woodburn at 4 p.m.
“They’re tough but that’s what we go after,” he said. “We go after tough competition. We’re a long ways from February.
“We will get better.”
