Husky wrestlers finish strong for win at South Albany

Sweet Home’s wrestlers took first place Saturday at the South Albany Tournament as three Huskies finished first individually in an eight-team competition dominated by 5A schools.

The Huskies edged North Salem 196 to 192.5, with Southridge third (170.5 points).

Danny Johnson finished first in the 112-pound weight class while Jack Perry was first at 125 pounds.

“Jack Perry wrestled very hard,” said Coach Steve Thorpe. “I was very proud of how he competed. He really had a good tournament.”

Taylor Tagle and Mitch Grove made it into the finals of the 103-pound division, but Thorpe said he decided not to have them wrestle each other, so technically it was a draw, he said, though Tagle, as Sweet Home’s scoring wrestler, took the forfeit.

“The fact that Mitch Grove and Taylor Tagle both made it to the finals, that shows you what the depth is like right now,” Thorpe said.

Second-place finishers were Levi Weikel at 140 pounds, Nick Pitts at 152, Anthony Albright at 171 and Shaw Valentine at 285.

“Levi wrestled very, very well,” Thorpe said.

The Huskies will celebrate Senior Night Thursday at 6 p.m. when they host Newport. They will host the Val-Co district tournament on Saturday, Feb. 9.

“We’re getting ready for that,” Thorpe said. “This is what these kids have been working for all season.”
