Husky wrestlers second at Seaside

Sweet Home grapplers chalked up another impressive tournament placing Saturday, the second in a week, taking second at the Seaside tournament.

Last weekend, the Huskies were third at the Oregon Classic.

“I was very impressed with our wrestlers,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “Every single wrestlers scored points for us and that’s unusual, no matter what team you have. We didn’t have anyone go two and out.”

Coach Thorpe said the Seaside event is considered one of the top 3A individual style tournaments in the state.

No. 1 ranked Estacada took the tournament title, scoring 263.5 points. The Huskies scored 184.5. Following were: Scappoose, 144.5; Coquille, 135; Tillamook, 129; Seaside, 123; Banks, 108.5; Molalla, 104.5; Elmira, 92; Cascade, 88.5; North Marion, 85; Rainier, 80.5; Central, 70.5; Astoria, 59; Neah-Kah-Nie, 55.5; Warrenton, 45.5; Vernonia, 7.

Sweet Home placers included: Joe McCaslin, 103, fourth; Cody Sells, 112, third; Shane Vandehei, 130, second; Jon Farris, 125, third, Trevor Tagle, 135, fifth; Jesse Aitken, 215, third; Tom Helfrich, 140, fifth; Colton Cooley, 152, third; Chris Kelley, 275, fifth.

Coach Thorpe said freshmen Joe McCaslin and Cody Sells “wrestled their hearts out” in this big tournament.

“I think Cody really surprised some people,” Coach Thorpe said. “His first match was with the eventual champion and he lost in overtime. He later pinned fourth-ranked Castor from Molalla.”

Chris Kelley had a very good tournament at heavyweight, placing fifth.

Shane Vandehei hardly practiced all week due a back injury he got at the Classic. He wanted to wrestle No. 1 ranked Brady Smith from Estacada, losing 19-11. But now, he’s wrestled him once and knows what to look for.”

Jesse Aitken, 215, scored several pins for the Huskies.

“This is a pinning and scoring team,” Coach Thorpe said. “They are picking up extra points by getting the big wins.”

The Huskies will host the Stayton Eagles Thursday. JV action starts at 6 p.m.

“Stayton may not bring many JV kids, so we’ll have some exhibition matches and such,” Coach Thorpe said. “Their varsity has been giving folks some trouble.”

Saturday Thorpe’s wrestlers round out their trio of tough tournaments, traveling to the Reser Tournament in Hillsboro. Thorpe said the tourney is ranked among the top five in the nation.
