‘Improving’ golfers host own tournament before hitting road again

Sweet Home hosted its only home golf tournament of the year Friday, April 8, finishing fifth – by two shots – in the five-team boys field that included three of the best teams in the state.

Marist won the team title at Mallard Creek Golf Course, finishing with a 322 as Ben Proulx tied with Woodburn’s Ty Beyer at 74 for individual medalist honors.

Cascade’s Ramsey Gordon was right behind with a 75, with teammate Izaiah Zavala third with a 78 to take the Cougars to second place. Woodburn was third (368), Stayton was fourth (425) and the Huskies finished with 427.

Morgan Sands led Sweet Home with a 95, followed by Chet Garrett (107), Carsen Perry (107), Joseph Himeinz (114) and Dakota Melkvik (122).

“We’re improving as a team,” Coach Ron Moore said Monday afternoon. “We played today at Trysting (Corvallis) and we shot 401 as a team.

“Where we need to improve the most is our short game. We have a lot of kids who are still three-putting. I even see some four-putting come through. It’s frustating.”

The boys play Wednesday, April 13, at Sand Pines in Florence.

It was the second match of the year for Sweet Home’s Bailey Womack, who finished with a 131 after carding a 119 earlier in the week at Emerald Valley. Marist senior Sandhya Vaikuntam shot a 71 for the low score of the day at Mallard, followed by teammates Esha Reddy (81), Madison Holmes (87) and Ashlyn Thomas (110). Cottage Grove had three golfers play nine holes.

The only girl who’s actively playing for the Huskies, Womack is scheduled to play at Middlefield (Cottage Grove) next.

The junior varsity boys also played nine holes. Freshman Easten Perry shot 47 for Sweet Home to finish fourth, with Jacob Silvers finishing back in the field with a 57. Marist sophomore Anthony Angelastro was low scorer, with a 39.

Moore said things are progressing with the golf program, noting that he’s grateful for support from Advanced Mechanical, which supplied some needed golf bags, and or Radiator Supply, which has provided hats and polos and rain gear for the team.

“Both those families really stepped up to help us out,” he said.
