Incumbents retain city council seats

Election overview

Sweet Home voters turned down a request to extend the Sweet Home Public Library’s operating levy 1,195 to 957 votes byt approved an extension to the Sweet Home Police Department’s levy 1,091 to 1,069.

Sweet Home voters supported the city council’s four incumbents, turning down a bid by challenger Detta Duncan. Receiving four-year terms in the election were Bob McIntire, Tim McQueary and Mayor Craig Fentiman. Dick Hill will serve a two-year term.

At the county level, Republican incumbent John Lindsey won a four-year term as commissioner against Democratic challenger Carole Johnson.

At the state level, Linn County voters supported the Republican candidate, Robert M. Bolanos, for House District 11, but Lane County voters, the majority of the district, chose to elect Democrat Phil Barnhart. The district includes rural areas southwest of Sweet Home, including Holley and Crawfordsville.

In House District 17, Republican incumbent Jeff Kropf won in both Linn and Marion counties against challenger Donald Beale. The district includes Sweet Home, Lebanon, Stayton and Sublimity. It extends east to Detroit and Idanha.

Democrat incumbent Rep. Peter DeFazio held a slight edge in Linn County against Republican Liz VanLeeuwen in the Fourth Congressional District. Overall, he defeated her by a little less than two to one.

Linn County voters disagreed with voters statewide on four ballot measures, including minimum wage, seismic upgrades for public buildings and electing judges by district. Linn County voters also supported Republican Kevin Mannix for governor over Democratic winner Ted Kulongoski.
