James Black

James (Jim) Sherrell Black, 96, of Sweet Home, died Feb. 5, 2023.

He was born Oct. 28, 1926, in Miami, Fla., and adopted by Claude and Lessie Black at the age of 3 months. He moved with them to the West Virginia and Ohio area where he became part of a family of seven sisters, one brother and three grandsons.

Mr. Black joined the United States Army Air Corps (now the United States Air Force) in 1945. He did basic training in Sheppard Field, Texas, after which he was stationed at Geiger Field in Spokane, Wash.

In the fall of 1946, he enrolled at Pacific Bible College (now Warner Pacific University) in Portland where he met his bride, Shirley Mabee, who was a resident of Sweet Home.

The couple married in 1951 and moved back to Sweet Home in 1953 where they raised their family of three children. They were married for more than 70 years until Shirley’s passing in 2021.

Mr. Black is survived by his sons, James Stanley Black and Richard Black; daughter Thema Black; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Tues., Aug. 29, at Sweet Home Evangelical Church.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
