James “Lynn” Rice, 95, of Sweet Home, died March 30, 2006.
He was born June 25, 1910 in Holley, the son of Clifford G. and Jenny M. (Hamilton) Rice.
Mr. Rice was a lifelong resident of the Sweet Home area. On Nov. 27, 1930, he married Genevieve Daugherty.
He was a member of the Sweet Home school board for many years, a member of the Sweet Home Planning Commission and served 12 years as an original member of the Sweet Home Fire Department. He worked in many area mills, retiring in 1975 from Clear Lumber Company as lead sawyer/millwright.
He was also an active member of Sweet Home United Methodist Church, serving as head of the Financial Commission, treasurer, grounds-keeper and maintenance man.
Mr. Rice is survived by his wife, Genevieve L. Rice of Sweet Home; daughters, Lila Stepanek of Medford and Kathleen Jones of Las Vegas, Nev.; son, Jim Rice of Sweet Home; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and siblings, Dick Rice of Holley, Doreen Cookson of Salem and Clarabell Jennings of Eugene.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Oletha Washburn and brother, Melvin Rice.
Services will be 2:30 pm Wednesday, April 5, at Sweet Home United Methodist Church. Private family burial will be at Gilliland Cemetery.
