James Stock

James Frederick “Skip” Stock, 67, of Sweet Home, died Oct. 20, 2012 at his home.

He was born Feb. 11, 1945 in Lebanon, the son of James E. and Frances K. (Morris) Stock. He was raised in Sweet Home, graduating from Sweet Home High School in 1963. In 1967 he graduated from Northwest Christian College in Eugene and earned a master of science degree from the University of Oregon in 1968.

Mr. Stock married Sylvia Del Dornhecker on Aug. 12, 1967 in Portland. In 1968, they moved to Santa Ana, Calif. where he was associate minister at Santa Ana First Christian Church. While in California, he developed his love for flying airplanes, became a licensed pilot and served two terms as chairman of the Orange County Airport Commission.

In 1974, the Stock family returned to Sweet Home, Oregon where he rejoined the family lumber business and remained a part of the industry until the time of his death. Mr. Stock had also served on the board of Holt International Children’s Services for more than 12 years.

He developed many hobbies over his lifetime. Many of them were centered around creating opportunities and access to spending time with friends and family. Besides being a licensed pilot, he enjoyed golf, and had a love for reading with an extensive library. He and Sylvia loved traveling in their motor home throughout the western United States and Canada.

After he was diagnosed with melanoma cancer in 2003, and while undergoing cancer treatments, Mr. Stock began riding motorcycles and took extensive rides across the United States, into Canada, Alaska and Baja.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Dornhecker Stock of Sweet Home; sons James and daughter-in-law Kirsten, Matthew and daughter-in-law Melissa, and Joel and daughter-in-law Barbara, all of Eugene; daughters Molly and son-in-law Jordan Barich of Newberg, and Jessica Stock of Portland; and four grandchildren, all of Eugene. Mr. Stock is also survived by his mother, Frances Stock of Sweet Home, brothers Ted and sister-in-law Rogene of Sweet Home, Nat of San Diego, Calif. and Jon of Eugene; and sister Janice and brother-in-law Jerry Powell of Lake Oswego. He had many beloved nieces and nephews as well.

He was preceded in death by his father, James E. Stock.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at Northwest Christian University Morse Event Center, on the corner of Alder Street and East 11th Avenue in Eugene. A private interment will be held at Gilliland Cemetery in Sweet Home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Northwest Christian University scholarship fund in honor of James F. Stock or the Riverside Christian Church Missions Fund, Sweet Home.
