Senior Jeff Ecker set a new meet record in the 100 backstroke Saturday at the Woodburn Invitational, eclipsing the old mark set by his former teammate Jeff Singleton.
Ecker’s time of 57.3 fueled just one of his three wins to lead the Husky boys team to a championship with 429 points far ahead of second place Junction City with 333 points.
Other boys scores were: LaSalle, 232; Dallas, 190; Wilsonville, 181; Valley Catholic, 166; Cascade, 144; North Marion, 134; The Dalles, 117; Woodburn, 58; Molalla, 52.
The Husky girls finished tied for fifth with Woodburn with 163 points, as LaSalle took the win with 447 points.
Combined, LaSalle took the overall championship with 679 points, Junction City was second at 622 and Sweet Home was third with 592 in the eleven team meet.
“This was our best performance of the year,” Coach Doug Peargin said. “We swam exceptionally well and we’re still going twice a day in practice. Most other teams are down to once a day.”
The Huskies took 19 swimmers to the met and placed 17 in at least two events each. Thirteen placed in all four events.
“I told the kids before the meet that if everyone could pull a couple points for us, we would be pretty tough. That’s why we’re called a team,” Coach Peargin said.
Single event winners were Nicole Starha, Chris Bate, Chris Burford and Sean Martin.
