John Cameron Asbury, 70, of Sweet Home, died Oct, 22, 2021.
He was born June 14, 1951, in Washington, D.C., to Glenn Cameron and Myrna Mae (Gillespie) Asbury.
His family moved to Santa Barbara, Calif. about 1962. John worked at Carburetor and Electric in Santa Barbara and Honda of Santa Barbara. He moved to Sweet Home in 1978 and was owner of the Shell station in Sweet Home during the 1980s and was owner of John’s Automotive from the 1990s until 2021.
He was a member of Riverside Christian Church in Sweet Home.
Mr. Asbury loved riding motorcycles and flying airplanes. He was a pro dirt track racer at Ascot Track. Back country camping by airplane was one of his favorites, and he loved his cats. Some would even say he was a cat whisperer.
On pleasant evenings, Mr. Asbury would walk to the end of 24th Avenue with his three cats following him.
Mr. Asbury is survived by his nephew, Duane Smith of Eugene; and niece Clara Sherer of Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine Lynn Smith, in 1995.
A graveside service was held Nov. 1, at Gilliland Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at noon Saturday, Nov. 13, at Riverside Christian Fellowship.
