Junior high athletes set nine school records on track

Sweet Home Junior High track and field athletes had a good year this year, setting nine school records.

The seventh-grade 4×100 relay team of Devyn Makin, Kristen Tolle, Annie Whitfield and Jessika Stewart posted a new record of 54.6 in that event. The seventh-graders also set a new record in the 4×400 relay, Tolle, Brandi Trewin, Paige Sanders and Makin combining for a 4:55 clocking. Eighth-graders Tim McDowell, David Walters, Kyle Sorenson and Alex Santana combined to set a new record of 3:54 in the 4×400.

Individual records were set by:

– Jessika Stewart in the long jump. The seventh-grader leaped 15-6 1/2, which is farther than any girl jumped this year in the Val-Co League teams’ high school competitions.

– Eighth-grader Alex Santana in the 100 (11.6) and 400 (55.00).

– Eighth-grader Maria Kropf in the 100 (12.5) and 100 hurdles (16.0), the latter clocking coming June 2 at the junior high state meet in LaPine. Kropf also ran the 200 in 26.5 to win both those events, plus the 100 (12.5).

– Eighth-grader Tim McDowell tied the school record in the 200, running 24.6.

“We usually have three to five school records set each year,” said head coach Angela Stevens. “They did awesome.”
