Junior high choir earns Spirit Award

The Sweet Home Junior High choir performed at the Newport Swing Choir Festival April 6 and brought home a plaque for the Overall Spirit Award, according to instructor Dean Friesen.

“Because this was our first jazz festival and we aren’t strictly a jazz choir, we chose to get critiques only and not compete for a trophy. Our students performed two numbers, “Route 66” and an arrangements of “Over the Rainbow”. We featured solos by Ben Allen, Alex Wilson, Chris Wallace and Katherine Keenon,” Mr. Friesen said.

The group was accompanied and chaperoned by Mrs. Judy Stevens.

The group was recognized for the award because of their attentiveness and because they stayed at the festival from beginning to end, encouraging other choirs.

Choir members include Ben Allen, Sarah Baird, Maria Bonneville, Danielle Burns, Hayley Cole, Jackelyn Hogan, Lani Joslin, Katherine Keenon, Tiffany Martin, Chelsea Miller, Oakley Tyler, Georgia Tyler, Chris Wallace and Alex Wilson.

“The behavioir and musical performance of these students are more reasons for this community to be proud of what we have,” Mr. Friesen said.
