Junior varsity opens season with 15-11 win

The Husky junior varsity baseball team defeated Creswell 15-11 in their opening game at home on March 20.

“After we got past the first-inning jitters and settled into a rhythm, this was a nice come-from-behind win,” Coach Jon Cohrs said. “Just about everyone contributed to this win. All but one starter got at least one hit, and our defense was pretty solid. We made all the routine plays and a few outstanding ones, especially Joe Kisselburgh at second base.

“Cody Miller had huge butterflies in the first, but once he calmed down and threw strikes, Creswell couldn’t really touch him. He mostly relied on his fastball, and he will need to work his breaking pitches in more frequently, but Cody competed hard today. He stayed composed and dominated the middle innings before running out of gas in the fifth.

“Offensively, I was kind of surprised that we got shut down in the first inning. That could have been a killer if we hadn’t gone back out and shut them down right away in the second. Our second time through the lineup we adjusted and put the ball in play. We didn’t necessarily pound the ball, but we put the pressure on Creswell and they couldn’t make the plays.

“Overall, I was pleased with our performance. We were able to identify some areas for improvement that will make us better down the road.”

The Huskies hold a 1-0 record.
