JV netters win two tourneys

The Husky junior varsity volleyball team won the top trophy in a tournament among 4A schools at Lebanon on Sept. 21.

The Huskies placed second in pool play after losting 15-13 and 15-5 to Springfield. The Huskies defeated Churchill 15-13 and 15-2 then split with Corvallis 15-10 and 10-15.

In bracket play, they defeated Sheldon 25-22 and 28-26.

In the championship match, the Huskies defeated West Salem 23-25, 25-18 and 15-13.

“We faced good competition during the tournament,” Coach Katie Stover said. “Alicia Moyer was our powerhouse from the middle. She did an exceptional job blocking, hitting and making smart plays.

“Ashley Wall set a great game and led the team with the most consistent serves.

“Alisha Basham also set a great game and in pool play served 12 points in a row, most of which were aces, against Churchill.

“Nicki Aerni and Michelle Fields made our wins possible with their dead-on passing.

“The entire team gave their all and worked hard to get into the championship game. They all have a passion for the sport and know what it takes to win. As a coach, I couldn’t be prouder.”

The team came back from the bottom of its pool at a tournament in Sweet Home on Saturday to win the championship.

The Huskies defeated Junction City 15-6 and 15-12 in pool play then lost to McKay 15-11 and 15-13 and Creswell 15-9 and 15-11.

In bracket play, they slipped by Marist 26-24 and 27-25 and Junction City 25-14 and 25-22 to get into the championship game.

In the championship, the Huskies lost their first game 25-11 but came back 25-14 and 15-12 in the next two to defeat McKay.

Earlier in the season, the team placed second at a tournament held in Junction City.
