Kambria Schumacher, Jess Keys named top harriers

Jess Keys and Kambria Schumacher were named most valuable runners for the Sweet Home cross-country team at the Huskies’ annual awards dessert Thursday, Nov. 17.

Keys, a junior, led the boys team through most of the season, despite suffering what he considered a sub-par performance in the district meet, in which he was beaten by teammate Peter VanDerlip.

Schumacher, a senior, led the girls team all season long, and along with her younger sister Cassandra, were the only two Sweet Home runners to make the state finals.

Cassandra Schumacher was named recipient of the Will to Win award, given to the individual whom teammates thought laid it on the line in every race, Coach Billy Snow said.

Korina Thompson, a senior who specializes in throws on the track team, was named Best Rookie Runner for her performance as a junior varsity runner most of the season.

Best Rookie Runner for the boys was sophomore Ramiro Santana, who rose from the JV squad to near the top of the Huskies pack during the season.

Most Improved Runner went to Josh Rice, who ran a varsity time in the JV race during districts, Snow said.

Most Inspirational Runner went to Heidi Wilson and Jessica Trautman, both of whom were mainstays of the girls team, which barely missed going to state this year.
