Keys wins decathlon with record effort

Sweeet Home sophomore Dakotah Keys turned in a dominating performance Friday and Saturday at the Sweet Home Decathlon and Heptathlon, winning all but one of the 10 decathlon events to establish a new school record in the event, as well as a school record in the pole vault.

That, despite some challenging weather that included wind, snow, hail, rain and a few spots of sunshine over the two-day event. Seventeen boys completed the decathlon, nine of them from Sweet Home, while nine girls finished the seven-event heptathlon.

Keys, who placed second last year as a freshman, scored 6630 points for the win, far ahead of second-place finisher Matt Holloway of Crane, who finished with 5215. Keys broke the school record of 13-10 in the pole vault, set in 1988 by Vern Malone, with a leap of 13-11 as black clouds rolled in and the wind picked up Saturday afternoon. After trying one more height at 14-1, he called it a day.

Getting the record proved to be a mental exercise, he said. “Once I knew I only had three more jumps left to get the record, it was pretty nerve-wracking,” he said. After he missed his first two jumps, “my Mom came over and talked to me and got me back into the mood I was in before,” he said.

“I was really excited when I broke the pole vault record. I’m glad I broke it here at the high school with all my friends around.”

Swet Home Coach Billy Snow said Keys’ weekend was “impressive, given the conditions and everything. He broke the school record in the decathlon, which I wasn’t expecting to happen given the conditions.”

Snow said Keys set new personal bests in all but three events – the javelin, the discus and the shot.

The Huskies’ Rob Callagan was the only other individual event winner in the decathlon, taking the final event, the 1500-meter run, in 4:42.2.

“Robbie had a great weekend,” Snow said, noting that Callagan came in above 4000 points and long jumped 19-0 in doing so. “He had a pretty good long jump. If we can get him working on the throws occasionally, he could break 5000 pretty easily.”

Freshmen Tim McDowell, Alex Santana and Zach Jackson are second, third and fourth on Sweet Home’s top marks for freshmen in the decathlon (behind Keys, who’s first). McDowell scored 4006 points and Santana finished with 3996 after no-heighting in the pole vault.

Snow said all the Sweet Home athletes who had competed in past decathlons or heptathlons bettered their previous marks.

North Bend senior Jessianne Heley won the heptathlon, scoring 3230 points to beat Amy Renfro of East Linn Christian Academy (2551). Ashley Danielson of Sweet Home finished third with 2325 points, which put her ninth on the school’s all-time best list.

“I thought the girls did a great job,” Snow said. “I don’t know where Ashley was (in the standings) on Day 1, but she wasn’t in third place.”

Carissa Swanson was the only other Sweet Home athlete who competed in the event, finishing ninth.

“Carissa is the first freshman girl ever to do the heptathlon,” Snow said. “I think the only thing she’d done before is the 800.”

The Huskies will be back in action at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Junction City Invitational.
