Kris Newport third at Reno World wrestling tournament

Sweet Home Mat Club wrestler Kris Newport placed third in the Reno World Tournament March 31-April 2.

Newport was one of five Mat Club wrestlers who competed in the tournament, which draws many of the top junior wrestlers on the West Coast and beyond.

“Kris has been working extra hard this year, wrestling weekend Mat Club tournaments, in addition to weekly Junior High tournaments and continuing on with post season Freestyle and Greco practices and it paid off for him this weekend,” said Coach Steve Schilling. “Kris and the other boys wrestled really stepped it up and wrestled some amazing matches against top kids in the nation at Reno. We are very proud of all their extra work and their showing at this tournament.”

Colton Schilling finished the tournament in seventh place, just one round shy of medaling. Mat Pits and Tyler Schilling wrestled five rounds into the tournament before they both had heartbreaking losses in overtime.

All of the boys will be wrestling in the Kids State Freestyle and Greco tournament this weekend, April 22-23.
