Lack of flag flying etiquette sad (March 16, 2022)

Editor:

Every day as I leave my home I am faced with a neighbor’s torn American flag flying high on a pole. Directly below their flag where a second honorable flag often flies, like P.O.W. M.I.A. or a state flag, is a “F— Biden” flag.

This is abhorrent, and an abuse of free speech. Any “F this” flag is inappropriate below our beloved flag.

I find flying any altered American flag off the bed of trucks equally offensive. Haven’t those people received flag etiquette in sixth grade? Or possibly they never completed an elementary education. If they did, flag etiquette should be reviewed. It is simple to do with the phone held in their hand.

All military take an oath to honor the Constitution and our flag, not a president or political party.

I shudder to think of what wrath one would receive if a “F—” Trump was flying above homes or off of trucks in our town.

Now I see pop-up “flag stores,” with the flag being further adulterated.

These flags likely are mass produced in China. Consumers of these altered flags should think about how countries like Russia and China want to cause division among American people. So in effect, those consumers are contributing to damaging our unity as a nation.

Now, more than ever, is the time for Americans to be united.

Please honor our flag. Fly it high, proud and in its true form.

Editor’s note: A few months ago, we received a similar letter on the same topic, but the writer, regrettably, declined to sign his name. Per our policy that all letters need to be signed, we were unable to run it as delivered. However, the writer made some worthy arguments, including the following (we held onto it, in case he changed his mind). So we’ve decided to include them here:

“I have always been proud of our most treasured flag. My father flew over 50 missions during World War II as a co-pilot and bombardier over the Pacific. And, as I know, so many of us have lost friends and family during the Vietnam conflict. They were proud to protect our mother country in time of need!

“I’ve always respected our flag, but now I see our flags in the back of trucks along with divisive political flags. Come on, America, we are better than this. The drivers come on as rebels, and do they really know what the flag stands for?”
