Lance Davenport

Aug. 8, 1924 – Nov. 8, 2010

Lance Eugene Davenport, 86, of Albany, formerly of Sweet Home, died Nov. 8, 2010 of abdominal cancer.

He was born Aug. 8, 1924 in Bismark, N.D. to Lewis and Florence F. (Fitch) Davenport.

Mr. Davenport attended grade and high school in North Dakota. He graduated from Hazelton High School in 1942. He served in the United States Army in Europe during World War II, from February 1943 to February 1946.

He earned his associate’s degree from Bismarck Junior College in 1948 and was employed as a policeman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He also worked in the Housing Department at Riverdale, N.D. during construction of Garrison Dam at Riverdale from 1948 to 1965. Garrison Dam is one of the largest rolled earth dams.

He was a life member of the Sweet Home Elks Lodge, holding the offices of treasurer and secretary. He was chairman of the Boys and Girls Hoop Shoot and the Scholarship Committee. He was also a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lions Club, Booster Club, and Sweet Home Traffic Safety Committee.

Mr. Davenport had been a member of the Riverdale Community Church in North Dakota and of Elm Street Baptist Church in Sweet Home.

He is survived by his wife, Adeline Davenport of Albany; children Lana G. Davenport of Albany, Larry A. Davenport of Tigard, Rik L. and daughter-in-law Lynnie Davenport of Lebanon, Lance E. II and daughter-in-law Julie Davenport of Abilene, Texas, and L. Scott and daughter-in-law Ann Davenport of Bend; four grandchildren; and one great-granchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and great-grandchild Cooper E. Miller.
