Larry Schaffer

Aug. 4, 1932 – July 9, 2018

Larry Lee Schaffer, 85, formerly of Sweet Home, died peacefully at his home on July 9, 2018.

The youngest and eighth child of Charles and Rose Schaffer, he was born Aug. 4, 1932 in Eugene and grew up on his family’s farm in Lorane.

Mr. Schaffer met Lois Barrett on a blind date and they married Feb. 9, 1954 in Reno, Nev.  They had three daughters.

Mr. Schaffer was a plywood mill worker, an asphalt tanker truck driver, a rock crusher operator and always a farmer at heart. He lived in Lorane, Eugene and Prine-ville, and spent two years working in Soldotna, Alaska before moving to Sweet Home in 1987. He retired from Morse Bros.  in 1994.

Mr. Schaffer was one of a kind. He thrived on doing things out of the ordinary.

He enjoyed spending time on his 40-acre farm and loved having his five grandchildren visit so he could show them about farm life and teach them all his old Indian tricks.  He became known as “the Ole Pig Farmer” to his neighbors and loyal pig customers and made lifelong friends with most of them.

He loved auctions, especially storage garage ones, and no one could embellish and tell a good story like him.

Mr. Schaffer moved off the farm two years ago and most recently resided near Spokane, Wash.

Survivors were not listed.

No services will be held at this time.
