The Huskies lost their final game of boys soccer Monday 1-0 to Newport at home.
“We’ve had too many of those,” Coach Al Grove said. His team has either lost by one or two goals or tied in almost every game this season.
“The team played well other than one play,” Grove said. Newport scored in the first half, as the Cubs threw the ball in deep and scored off a header.
“We got some shots off,” Grove said. “We just didn’t get anything inside the net. I thought the kids played hard, and it’s kind of the way the season’s gone.”
Newport fielded 10 seniors, while the Huskies had only two on the field, Grove said. Jared Severns and Jonny Penner leave the Huskies after this season, but “the rest are coming back.”
All season, “I thought the kids played well,” Grove said. “We’ve just got to do what it takes to win. We were in almost every game, except for Central.”
The team has gotten much better over the season, Grove said. Now with the team getting older with some experience, “they’ve got to want it.”
