Last-minute change of venue doesn’t faze Huskies

It never hurts to have a back-up plan and Sweet Home track and field coaches are learning that, with the cancellation of two Sky-Em meets this season due to foul weather.

That’s why the Huskies were on familiar ground Thursday, April 28, at Philomath, instead of La Pine, where the temperatures were predicted to be in the mid-30s and Junction City, the other team scheduled to be at the meet, had already pulled out.

“We’ve learned this year every time we have a meet scheduled on the east side, it’s better to have two scheduled – one on the east side and one on the west side,” Coach Billy Snow said. “This was a biggie, getting to see some different faces.”

Sweet Home was missing 20 to 25 athletes due to a choir tour and other factors, Snow said. The Huskies finished second on to Philomath on the boys side (105-71) and third in the girls, with 51 points behind Cascade (89) and Philomath (88).

Annie Whitfield had a big day in the javelin, throwing a lifetime best and new school record 137-0 to solidify her status as front-runner in the state 4A standings.

In the boys javelin, Zach Jackson threw 173-5 to lead a four-man sweep for Sweet Home, and his third straight effort over 170 feet.

Nick Hall won the 300 hurdles in 39.88, despite hitting two on the home stretch and literally “helicoptering” on the way to the finish line, Snow said. “If he puts a perfect race together, I wouldn’t be surprised if he hits the high 38s.”

Other winners for the boys were Alex Santana in the 100 (11.36); Daniel Danforth in the 3000 (9:40.59), which felt “easy,” he told Snow, after winning by nearly a minute over his closest competitor as Philomath held its top runners out of that event; and Jackson in the shot (41-10 1/2),

For the girls, Davyn Makin ran a lifetime best 13.94 to win the 100; Nicole Rasmussen won the 1500 in 5:26.84; and Brandi Trewin won the high jump on misses with a leap of 4-8.

Snow said the long jump and triple jump were scratched because the conditions were so wet and muddy. He said he believes the weather also contributed to far lower-than-usual results in the discus and the shot.

“My guess is that ring was slick,” he said.

The Huskies will travel to South Albany Wednesday, May 4, for their final meet before the district competition on Thursday and Saturday, May 12 and 14, in Sisters.

They will face Lebanon and South Albany at the Rebels’ track.

“South Albany will give us a chance to put most of our varsity lineup together,” Snow said. “We’ll see some new faces. It’s going to be fun.

“It’s supposed to be sunny. We haven’t experienced that this year.”
