LBCC event to welcome students Sept. 21

“Surfin’ Safari” will be the theme of this year’s Welcome Day at Linn-Benton Community College, beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the Russell Tripp Performance Center theater located in Takena Hall, Albany campus.

The second annual event is a chance for new and returning students to learn about all the college has to offer this school year.

The festivities begin with a kickoff in the theater featuring LBCC’s award-winning choirs “The Sirens” and “Blue Light Special,” a welcome by LBCC President Greg Hamann and a reading by LBCC Poet Laureate Ruth Krueger.

After the kickoff, more than three-dozen campus groups and community organizations will have displays in the courtyard quad offering ways for students to get involved.

Students are eligible to win prizes, including tuition credits and bookstore gift certificates as well as a chance to win a 60-second shopping spree from the bookstore and a TI-84 graphing calculator valued at approximately $100.

LBCC Welcome Day events run until 2 p.m. Additional activities include a fashion show in the Commons cafeteria and a campus scavenger hunt where students are invited to tour campus, meet their instructors and staff and get their books and school supplies. Free pizza will be available from the college’s new wood-fired oven.

“Welcome Day is a perfect opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with LBCC as they start, or continue, on their road to college completion,” said Sally Moore, LBCC associate dean of Academic Development, Communication Arts and Mathematics, who helped found the event last year. “It promises to be a day filled with fun, food and festivities.”

Welcome Day, along with efforts such as Destination Graduation, are geared to help students succeed in college as well as making them aware of available resources, whether students are headed directly to the workforce, a two-year degree or transferring to a four-year university.

LBCC’s Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers will host student appreciation activities on the first day of classes on Monday, Sept. 26.
