Local artists are being called upon to submit proposals for artwork in the East Linn Workforce Development Center.
Linn-Benton Community College wishes to commission a piece of art to be placed on an interior wall of the new East Linn Center in Lebanon. The college seeks artwork that incorporates the historic nature of the site, specifically the Elkins Flour Mill, which is located on the property.
Proposals should be reflective of this theme, although other historical events specific to the site will be considered. For further information about this site please check the following webpages: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/or/town/lebanon/elkinsmill.html and http://www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com/OR/Linn/state.html The proposal deadline is July 31, 2002.
Proposals should be sent to Gary Ruppert of the Arts and Aesthetics Resource Team at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd., Albany, Oregon 97321.
All artists residing in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California are eligible with preference given to Oregon residents. Submissions should include a two-page draft proposal for installation, 5 to 10 slides of your recent work (labeled with your name, red dot in lower left corner, and corresponding number of the piece on slide sheet, an accompanying slide sheet with number, size, and media, a brief artists resume including other public art or installation works and their locations, and professional references.
Artists should include their name, address, phone and email with their submission. From the proposals, five artists will be selected to further develop the project concept and support materials.
These proposals will then be presented to a panel comprised of artists, administrators and community citizens, for the final, single, selection. The dimensions of the flat surface are 16 feet high and 21 feet, 6 inches in width. The wall is viewed from two stories from a nearby stairwell, and is located above the front desk entryway to the Center. The surface is standard gypsum board, atop studs, fixed to a concrete base. The five finalists will be provided detailed diagrams of support placements. The wall does not receive direct sunlight.
Images of the Lebanon Center and designated wall space can be viewed at http://www.linnbenton.edu/publicart. The design is open to all media. Designs should reflect the above historical considerations, as well as effectively and aesthetically incorporate the 2 and 3-D space. Pieces need to be able to attach securely and safely to the flat surface, which will accommodate reasonable weight. Artists, as independent contractors, will need to provide their own insurance coverage and will be responsible for insuring the art work up until the time it is installed at the Lebanon site.
Review of artists’ submissions and selection of five finalists will take place in early August. In mid- to late- August the selection panel will review the five finalists. The selection committee will notify the finalists of their decision on October 31. The selected work will be installed in the East Linn Workforce Development Center by March 24, 2003.
