The City of Lebanon reported Tuesday, Sept. 22, that it has been made aware of scam emails being sent to customers that appear to come from the city and may include the city logo, staff names, or project information. These emails request payment by wire transfer for city-related fees, particularly for planning and development projects.
Those messages are fraudulent.
“The city will never request payment by wire transfer,” it said in a statement issued Tuesday. Anyone with questions about a fee or payment request should contact the city before making a payment.
What you should do:
• Do not send funds in response to these emails
• Do not click links or open attachments from suspicious messages
• Verify any payment request by contacting the City directly by calling: Planning and Building at (541) 258-4906 or Utility Billing/Finance (541) 259-4913.
• If you receive a suspicious email, please report it to the City so we can investigate
This scam has most often targeted Planning Department customers, including applicants, contractors, and developers, but all customers should remain cautious, the city’s report said.
