Leora May (Layton) Keenon

Leora (Layton) Keenon, 90, of Sweet Home, died Dec. 31, 2005 at Lebanon Community Hospital.

She was born Dec. 3, 1915 in Hillsboro to Claude and Mabel (Northrup) Williams.

She grew up in Banks on the family farm. She attended grade school at Harrison, a one-room country school, and graduated from Banks High School in 1934. She married Gordon B. Layton on Aug. 21, 1936. Approximately two years later, they moved to Sweet Home, where they built their home and raised their family. In 1953, she went to work at Sweet Home High School as a secretary for the next 22 years.

Mrs. Keenon was a Girl Scout leader, past Noble Grand of the Rebekah’s, also chaperoned the Sportsman Holiday Court for many years. Gordon died in 1970. She married Ed Keenon on March 16, 1974. After retirement, they traveled a lot to Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, Florida, and Nebraska. Ed died Feb. 10, 1987.

Leora moved to Hillsboro in 1988. She was active as a hospital auxiliary volunteer and secretary of the Pythean Sisters for 10 years. She moved back to live next door to her daughter in Lebanon in 1996. She then moved to Wiley Creek Retirement Home in Sweet Home. Her hobbies were crossword puzzles, crewell stichery, and reading. She loved to go fishing and camping with her family.

She is survived by her sons: Evan, and his wife Shirley, Layton of Cornelius; and Leslie, and his wife Delores, Layton of Salem; daughter Carol Hagle of Lebanon, eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded by her husbands, Gordon Layton and Ed Keenon, sister Wanda Garrigus, brother Bob Rielly, and grandson Greg Hagle.

A funeral service was held Jan. 5 at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel, with burial at Gilliland Cemetery. Contributions can be made to Wiley Creek Activity Fund ,5050 Mountain Fir Court, Sweet Home, OR 97386.
