Letter: Are leaders really ‘following science?’ (Dec. 22, 2021)

Editor:

Since Day 1 of COVID-19, medical advisors and decision-makers have ordered citizens to “follow the science” while they have themselves not been reading the evidence and have been blinded by their own prejudices and ego.

Meanwhile, science has been studying and researching: The government “lockdown society” response has been a no-gain total loss, damaging males and children in lower socioeconomic families most gravely and done irreparable damage to still uncounted small and medium-sized businesses and single-parent households. Coming and going, they were wrong: Economy lockdown did not stop the COVID spread and economic re-opening did not bring in a second wave of infections.

The science is in: Children are a tiny portion of actual COVID cases, have less severe illness and are not major spreaders. Nationally mandated school closures, on the other hand, contribute greatly to household stress, pressure parents in many ways, while also creating a gap in the safety net for children neglected or at risk of abuse and the prime victims of malnutrition. More ominously, youth suicide, drug overdose and mental health markers have soared.

Lockdowns: For the first time in human history, lockdowns were used as a strategy to counter the virus. But Stanford University researchers found, in a paper published at PubMed.gov, that stay-at-home orders and business closure lockdowns have shown no significant benefits on stopping the spread of COVID-19 in England, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, or the United States in 2020. Yet, insistent popular and conventional wisdom has been insistent that lockdowns were successful.

Mental Health: Researchers have reported that at least 16.8% of U.S. adults have suffered “major mental harm” from (public) responses to Covid-19, which statistically has been shown to rob each one of them of 1.3 years of life, thus destroying 55.7 million years of life.

Unemployment Shock: Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a professor at Stanford Medical School, has predicted that the United States will experience more than 1 million excess deaths in the next two decades as a result of the massive “unemployment shock” last year… stating that “lockdowns are the single worst public health mistake in the last 100 years.”

False Projection Models: Scientific research unanimously concludes that early models used to create COVID-19 lockdown policies turned out to be highly incorrect, that they were based on false assumptions and tended to over-estimate the benefits and under-estimate the costs.

Finally, contrary to what many keep saying, it is lockdowns that caused the unprecedented economic and social damage that has been done to society. Two of Sweden’s leading experts on global health concluded that anti-coronavirus restrictions have killed as many people as the virus itself, according to a report by norwaytoday.info.

Barton Swaim, writing in the Wall Street Journal, states: “Disputes over masks, school closures, business shutdowns, social distancing guidelines and all the rest – should always have properly been a discussion of acceptable versus unacceptable risk. But the majority of America’s cultural and political leaders showed no ability to think about risk in a helpful way.”

In Oregon, after two years of business and public-school shutdowns, mask mandates, vaccine and business mandates, Gov. Brown has recently announced that she wants to make mask-wearing permanent. Does that agree with the science?
