Library Seeks Help for Paint Project

The staff at Sweet Home Public Library would like the public’s help to place books in their parking lot – paintings of books, that is.

Library Director Megan Dazey and Programming Librarian Kira Mikutaitis envision each of the 46 parking spaces across the building to be designed with book spines, sort of like shelves of books featuring classics, Oregon classics and a few personal favorites from those who will help paint.

Dazey came up with the idea after seeing that high school students were able to paint their own parking spots, and her staff saw it as an opportunity to potentially draw a little more traffic to the library.

“That way we can make a little library out of the library parking lot,” Mikutaitis said.

But the project is no small feat. Staff are asking for the public’s help by searching their storage areas for cans of exterior paint for the project. Even half a can would be appreciated, Mikutaitis said, stressing that it must be paint intended for outdoor exposure.

“It doesn’t really matter the color,” she said. “We want it to be colorful and eye-catching.”

Mikutaitis expects the project will take a few days to complete, maybe a couple of weekends, depending on how many helpers she has. So far she has some teenagers from her monthly teen game night events who seem eager to help.

“My teens were very excited about the idea and they are excited to be able to kind of personalize it,” she said.

But perhaps some more extra hands would be welcomed when the day comes. Stencils will be available to make the job much easier, and refreshments will be provided.

“I really am gonna need help,” Mikutaitis said. “It’s not something I can do all by myself.”

Anyone interested in helping or donating can stop by the library during open hours Tuesday through Saturday at 1101 13th Ave., or call 541.367.5007.
