The Sweet Home water polo squad dropped a non-league contest 11-2 to Cottage Grove in Cottage Grove Oct. 6.
In their second meeting of the season the Huskies applied strong defense the first quarter which resulted in a 1-1 tie going into the second quarter. The Huskies could not sustain the high-energy defense necessary to hold back the Lions’ swimming speed and allowed Cottage Grove outscored Sweet Home 8-1 going into the fourth quarter.
The Lions scored two additional scores on penalty shots to finish the game at 11-2.
“We just could not sustain our defensive pressure to control their speed,” Coach Craig Martin said. “We were able to do it for a the first quarter but the game got away from us in the second and third quarters.”
Junior Michael Moser and senior Jake Johnson scored the only goals.
Next up for the Huskies, 1-4 on the season and 1-1 in league play, is a game at Madras/Culver on Wednesday, Oct. 12 in Madras. The Huskies’ schedule this year is somewhat fluid but their next confirmed home game will be against West Albany on Oct. 20 at 4 p.m.
