Sweet Home PEO, Chapter DD, has announced its annual scholarship winners.
Sweet Home area residents, Josie Knight will be awarded $1,250 for the Marguerite Scholarship, and Sierra Swanson will be awarded $1,100 through the Oregon State Chapter Scholarship.
“These awards will be used to complete their chosen degrees and it’s an honor to be able to help these ladies,” said Cynde Burford, education chairperson. ”
Also, Grace Glenn, a Brownsville resident, has received the PEO Scholastic-Talent-Accomplishment-Recognition Scholarship. The STAR Scholarship is a national honor and is awarded to an exceptional high school senior. Glenn is one of 19 Oregon women receiving the $2,500 award.
This is the first time Chapter DD has received this scholarship for any of its applicants.
Glenn not only has excelled academically, she is a talented pianist and a dedicated and personable leader. Glenn also exhibited other qualities that the STAR scholarship is based upon: community service, extracurricular activities and potential for future success.
PEO’s purpose is to promote educational opportunities for deserving women of all ages, foster, life-long supportive relationships between women and enhance the lives of those within its community.
The chapter is able to provide these scholarships through an annual berry sale. Each June members take orders for locally grown, flash-frozen strawberries, blueberries and marionberries. Berries will be ready for pick up in August.
“This summer we would love to double our orders and be able to help future deserving ladies achieve their education goals,” Burford said.
