Students from Holley School and Sweet Home Charter School competed May 7 in the Sweet Home School District Spelling Contest.
The tests were written, rather than oral organizer Sharon Arthur said.
Winners in Division I (Grades 1 to 5) were Jacob Ingram in first and Ethan Parrish, second. Winners in Division II (Grades 6-8) were Olivia Martineau in first and Gavin Walberg, second.
To qualify for the district contest, students had to win spelling contests at their respective schools. The next step for the district winners is the Regional Spelling Contest on May 21, which brings the top spellers from Linn and Benton counties together at Calapooia Middle School in Albany.
Winners from that contest will compete in the Oregon Statewide Spelling Championship on Sept. 5 at Oregon State Fair.
All district schools, including Sweet Home High School, are eligible to participate and Arthur said she would like to see more schools take part.
