Three Sweet Home swimmers from the Mid Valley Swim Team competed in the Oregon Swimming 11-and-Over Long Course Meters Championship held July 27-30 at Mt. Hood Community Pool.
Kieran Schaefer, 15, finished the season with Oregon Zones qualifying times in the 15-16 400-meter freestyle.
Jayce Calhoon, 14, finished his season with Oregon Zones qualifying times in the 100-yard backstroke, 1650 yard freestyle and the 200 yard and meter backstroke.
All the events were held in a Olympic-size 50-meter pool. Swimmers had to qualify among the top nine in the prelims to make the finals in each event.
Calhoon, whose mother Junia coaches the team, finished third in the 1500-meter freestyle (18:32.93), eighth in the 200-meter backstroke (2:28.56), eighth in the 800-meter freestyle (9:45.12), 12th in the 200-meter individual medley (2:34.48), and 13th in the 100-meter backstroke (1:10.58) and 400-meter freestyle (4:45.93).
Schaefer placed ninth in the 400-meter freestyle (4:42.79) and in the 200-meter freestyle (2:11.93). He also placed 11th in the 200-meter backstroke (2:37.22).
Mid Valley’s third contestant, Michael Simmonds, 14, placed eighth in the 1500-meter freestyle (20:03.66), 12th in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:23.96) and 27th in the 400-meter freestyle (5:05.38).
The team’s short-course season begins in September.
