The Sweet Home Youth Advisory Council is inviting local teens to participate in the 2019 Youth Leadership Summit Saturday, July 27, at Cascadia State Park.
The invitation is open to students in the seventh through 12th grades.
In its second year, the program will be held at Cascadia State Park, said City Councilor Lisa Gourley, adviser to the YAC. A relaxed historical setting, Cascadia State Park has petroglyphs, 150-foot falls, soda springs and beautiful scenery.
The location is an early native trading site and stopping point for settlers on the Santiam Wagon Road, she said.
“The park is nestled along the incredible South Santiam River, creating a truly amazing place for this event.”
The purpose of the event is to inspire youths to see themselves as potential community leaders, Gourley said. “Leaders are people that decided to step up.”
This is the YAC’s mission, Gourley said, and it is the YAC’s responsibility to provide community activities that instill a feeling of self-worth and esteem among youths and to instill community pride and a positive influence among future leaders.
A bus departs Sweet Home High School at 8:45 a.m. and will arrive at Cascadia State Park at 9:15 a.m. Registration begins at the park at 9 a.m.
Participants should bring a water bottle, personal medical equipment, comfortable school appropriate shoes and clothing that can get wet, a hat, sunglasses, sun block and a change of clothing, which is optional.
Participants will spend the day hiking, listening to guest speakers and participating in team-building activities.
There is no charge for the event, and lunch will be provided. All participants will need to preregister. Forms are available at the city library, Chamber of Commerce office, the Boys and Girls Club and the city website under “government and “YAC.” The website also includes a video link.
