Singers are invited to join the Singing Christmas Tree, which begins practicing Sept. 13 for its 35th annual performance scheduled for Dec. 2-4.
The Singing Christmas Tree is a part of the annual Christmas in Sweet Home activities. The choir performs while standing on a Christmas-tree-shaped riser structure in the Sweet Home High School auditorium.
Practices are held at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Sweet Home High School choir room.
The theme this year is “Christmas: The Universal Gift,” said Sue Olson, committee chairwoman. “We picked the theme in February. We chose music in May.”
The Singing Christmas Tree rotates every other year between an emphasis on secular and sacred music, she said. This year is a “sacred” year, so the music will be more sacred.
Among selections this year will be “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “Let There be Peace on Earth,” “Oh, Holy Night,” “Ave Maria” and the traditional closing song, the “Hallelujah Chorus.”
Paul Rowton will return as director.
The Singing Christmas Tree Committee soon will begin planning to commemorate its 35th performance, Olson said.
