Madelene “Maddy” Felch Battey, 91, of Lebanon, died Friday, May 11, 2007 at Samaritan Albany General Hospital.
She was born Sept. 8, 1915 in Bedford Township, Mich. to Elroy and Annetta (Allan) Felch. As a child she lived in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada where she attended school through middle school in a one room schoolhouse.
She completed her high school and college education in Michigan, graduating with a nursing degree from the University of Michigan. She met her husband Bruce while at the University of Michigan. They would have been married for 65 years on May 31st.
They moved several times, living in Michigan, Massachusetts, Kansas, Missouri, New York, California, Idaho, and Oregon.
With her love of books, she was very involved with the Sweet Home Friends of the Library and was instrumental in the opening of the “Friends” Bookstore.
Mrs. Battey was a very loving and friendly woman, making friends everywhere she lived. She was also an involved mother and grandmother with everything from Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to baseball, football, horseshows, wrestling, and track
She had served as president of the Sweet Home Friends of the Library. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crafts. She loved books and reading and also loved gardening.
Mrs. Battey is survived by her husband, H. Bruce Battey of Lebanon; daughters, Maggie Winslow and her husband Duane of Sweet Home and Dorothy Gaspard and her husband Jerry also of Sweet Home; sons, Robert Battey and his wife Mickey of Fountain Valley, Calif. and William Battey of Venice, Calif .; sister, Dorothy Secka of Michigan; brother, Edsal Vandercook of Michigan; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at the Sweet Home Elks Lodge. The family will provide the main course; side dishes would be welcome. On-line condolences for the family can be left at http://www.hustonjost.com.
