Man, 70, arrested on sex abuse charges

John Edward Birman, 70, faces 21 counts of sex abuse-related charges that are alleged to have occurred in Sweet Home and Lebanon between 2011 and 2014.

Sweet Home Police officers arrested him on a Linn County Circuit Court warrant at 1:54 p.m. on Jan. 6 at a residence on Osage Street in Sweet Home.

According to court documents, there are three alleged victims who were all under the age of 16.

Birman is charged with six counts of first-degree sex abuse, five counts of first-degree sodomy, two counts of second-degree sodomy, two counts of first-degree rape, one count of second-degree rape, one count of third-degree rape, one count of third-degree sodomy and one count of first-degree unlawful penetration. He was arraigned in Linn County Circuit court on Jan. 8.

Court documents list Birman’s residence in Redmond, but he has had addresses in Sweet Home and Lebanon.

He is lodged at Linn County Jail. His bail is set at $250,000.
