Man arrested after alleged stabbing

A Sweet Home man stabbed last week underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition, while his alleged assailant was arrested for assault.

Officers and paramedics responded at approximately 8:33 p.m. on Nov. 29 to Chewy’s Sports Pub, 1200 12th Ave., when a male subject, who had been stabbed, stumbled into the bar.

The suspect, Mark Daniel Newens, 23, was not on the scene. Officers searched the area and then located and arrested him for first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

The victim, Donald Wayne Ames, 48, was transported to Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital where he underwent surgery.

Ames had been released from Sweet Home police custody about 45 minutes earlier, after having been arrested at 1:54 p.m. at 1111 Nandina St. for second-degree criminal mischief and harassment after allegedly pushing his son in the face and stabbing a tire on his son’s pickup.

After the stabbing, police talked to witnesses and were able to identify a suspect, said Police Chief Bob Burford. Newens was taken into custody on Tamarack Street. Police deployed a TASER electronic stun device during the arrest.

Newens was lodged at Linn County Jail.
