Man dies in logging accident in Canyon Creek area

A Dorena man died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 20, in a logging accident, Sheriff Michelle Duncan reported Friday.

According to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, 9-1-1 dispatchers received a call at 3:07 p.m. Thursday, requesting  help for an immediate rescue in a  forested area off Canyon Creek Road, east of Sweet Home. The caller reported a male was injured during logging operations.

Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District personnel and multiple deputies responded to the area and located members of the logging crew coming out of the area trying to get the victim, Christopher Butler, 32 of Dorena, to an area where he could receive medical attention.  Butler’s injuries were fatal, and he died before he could be transported to a hospital.

Deputies worked through the evening and Friday morning to investigate the incident.

“At this time, there is no evidence of foul play or equipment malfunctions,” Duncan said in a statement.

She said deputies will continue to investigate the incident and work with Oregon Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to determine the cause of the accident.
