A Salem man was killed early Friday morning, July 29, when he was struck by a vehicle while walking near milepost 229 along Interstate 5 south of Albany.
The incident was reported shortly after midnight.
According to the Oregon State Police, 45-year-old Charles Dwayne Hatfield entered the interstate’s lane of travel on foot, where he was hit by a Toyota van driven by 39-year-old Poblano Lopez of Lynwood, Wash.
Hatfield was pronounced dead at the scene. Lopez is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon Department of Transportation, and Salem and Tangent police and fire departments provided assistance during the incident.
