Nov. 1, 1937-May 7, 2006
Martha June (nee Smith) Hadland, 68, of Sweet Home died of endometrial cancer on May 7, 2006 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene.
She was born Nov. 1, 1937 to Preston Allen Smith and Emma Grace Carpenter, who had retired and moved from Eldred, Pa. to the Pasadena, Calif., area before her birth She spent a carefree childhood at the large old Smith family home in Altadena, along with her four older siblings. She graduated from Pasadena City College, and from Long Beach State College in 1960.
She taught elementary school for a few years before and after she married Wayne O. Hadland in 1962; at the time of her death they had been married for 44 years.
The Hadland family lived in the Evergreen area of San Jose, Calif., from 1965 to 1978. From 1978 to 1999 they lived on the rural San Mateo County coastside between Moss Beach and Montara, at the far end of June Hollow Road (which was named after Mrs. Hadland and her daughters and remains her memorial). The family spent their happiest years at home there together, within view of the ocean.
In 1999, after her husband retired from the Department of the Navy, they sold their coastside home and moved to the outskirts of Sweet Home.
Mrs. Hadland is survived by her husband, Wayne, and by their three daughters, Taina June Rett of San Jose, Calif., Gretel June Colvert of Palo Alto, Calif., and Katrina June Hadland of Lebanon; three grandchildren; and by all four of her older siblings.
A memorial Mass was held Sunday, May 14, in Antioch, Calif. Mrs. Hadland’s ashes will be scattered on the ocean near Depoe Bay.
Contributions in her memory to the American Cancer Society are appreciated.
